How To Write Immersive Descriptions With Perfect Pacing

We can’t talk about pacing without talking about descriptions. After all, “pacing” is really just the balance of description and narrative, the two elements that make up every story.

I get this question a lot: “Abbie, how do I know when my pacing is too slow or too fast?” I also get this question a lot: “Abbie, how much description is TOO much description?” The funny thing is, these two questions go hand-in-hand, so I thought I would make a video explaining both.

In order to understand pacing, we first have to break down what “pacing” actually is: the balance between description and narrative in your story. How you write your narrative is YOUR unique style… but there are things we can do with description to make it more VISUAL and IMMERSIVE for our readers – without having to overwhelm them with an information overload.

So in this video we dive deep into:

  • the secret to PERFECT pacing (it’s so simple)
  • how to write descriptions that MATTER to your story
  • how to make your reader have the same immersive, dynamic experience READING your story as you had dreaming it all up
  • how screenplays can teach you how to turn descriptions into visual feasts

Let’s talk.

Let’s talk pacing! What is another great example of a well-paced scene in a book or a movie? What can you learn from that, as a writer? Do you ever read screenplays? If so, which ones are your favorites?
