He’s spent his life running from who he is. She’s been trying to escape her past for 100 years…

Born with unexplainable abilities he struggles to control, college student Ion tries desperately to integrate into his new school and finally put his dark past behind him. But after making a serious enemy, which leads to an accidental rendezvous with the mysterious old man next door— and his hauntingly beautiful but troubled young protégée Hawk, Ion realizes his life will never be normal again.
Late one evening, Hawk drags him by the hand into a closet-turned-rabbit-hole to an extra dimension, and Ion finds himself stumbling involuntarily into a secret society of training for “anomalies,” teenagers with a special set of abilities. Just like him.
As they train to become Protectors of future Earth, battling each other as well as their own demons, both Ion and Hawk begin to realize that they are far more alike than they realized. Unsettlingly so.
When the Dimension is shaken by an unthinkable betrayal, will an ancient prophecy bring Hawk and Ion together—or will a deadly threat hidden in plain sight cost them both their powers… and their lives?

5 REASONS TO READ THE BLOOD RACE

1. IT IS EPIC

I knew I wouldn’t be able to write a review because it would’ve been filled with nothing but biased babblings and flailings and I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE JUST THROWN THE BOOK AT YOUR FACE AND TOLD YOU TO READ IT which would be kind of rude??? idk. So I decided to make a list so as to not get too distracted. BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE – though my opinion be biased it is 10000% true and if you don’t believe me??? YOU HAVE NO LOYALTY AND NO WAFFLES. *gasp*
What were we talking about?? OH YES. THE BLOOD RACE IS EPIC. Like…next level. I’m talking deep themes, complex plots, thought-provoking allegories AS WELL AS BLOOD AND CAR CHACES AND JUMPING OFF CLIFFS. < But it’s not all adrenaline rush 25/8 like some books BECAUSE PSA: KATE IS A BRILLIANT STORYTELLER.* The Blood Race is a masterpiece. End of.
*And if you read my last post you know that I have a special fondness for brilliant storytellers :’)

2. YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTERS

They are superhuman, but at the same time they are so human. So broken and raw and real and I want to smack some of them into the middle of next week and I want to HUG SOME OF THEM TO INFITITY BECAUSE THEY ARE JADED LITTLE CINNAMON ROLLS THAT NEED MORE LOVE. To be quite honest, I just need you to read it so that we can flail about the characters together?? LIKE FIN. LET’S TALK ABOUT FIN PLEASE.* All of the characters in this book are flawlessly flawed. < EVERYTHING I COULD ASK FOR IN CHARACTERS.
*I recently said to Kate: “I just want to materialize Fin and marry him” so that’s saying a lot

3. WORLD BUILDING = OUT OF THIS WORLD

Kate and I often discuss story ideas with each other and one of the things I most often say to her is “how do you think of this stuff??” and “how do you even begin to PUT THAT INTO WORDS??” < The ideas that come out of this girls brain = STRAIGHT FIRE. She was born to write fantasy, I think. I have no idea how she spins these beautiful, complex, fascinating worlds into existence with her words. I’m just over here sobbing nervously over my manuscript and smashing my keyboard. < tru story.

4. IT’S UNLIKE ANY OTHER BOOK YOU’VE EVER READ

UM YES THIS IS AN ASSUMPTION BC I HAVEN’T READ EVERY BOOK IN THE WORLD…but let me tell you a secret: Kate is not
a reader.
THE GIRL DOESN’T READ BOOKS. It’s just not her cup of tea?? (tbh I’m lowkey studying her to figure out how she survives but that’s another topic for another time…) My point is: THE BLOOD RACE IS SO DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF THIS. I am constantly reassuring her that it is amazingly unique because I’ve read some not-at-all-unique fantasy/sci-fi thrillers and…let me tell you another secret: THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER EVER EVER.

5. MY SISTER WROTE IT AND IF YOU LOVE ME, YOU LOVE MY SISTER TOO

My sister and I have been best friends ever since I was born.* We started writing together as soon as we…could write. FOR REAL. I THINK I WAS SIX YEARS OLD and asking Kate “how do you spell the word ‘wood’?” < vivid memory right there. Some of my fondest childhood memories consist of me and her getting up every morning and sitting at our dining room table with piles of paper and markers and pens and tea and WRITING FOR HOURS AND HOURS. We still do this, 15 years later (sans markers bc we don’t write picture books about dogs and plumbers anymore.)
SO OBVIOUSLY I am a wonderfully loyal sister and YOU ARE A WONDERFULLY LOYAL FRIEND TO ME so…? See where this is going???? GO READ THE BOOOOK. MY SISTER WROTE IT. MY SISTER MEANS SO MUCH TO ME. You know that to do. 😉
*yes she lived in a world horribly void of My Awesomeness™ for TWO YEARS AND SIX MONTHS CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE????? idk how she survived but good thing she did because this book
