How To Write Theme Into Your Story (Without Being Preachy)

Theme: the backbone of every good story. Theme gives a story meaning not only to the characters, but to you – the reader. And as writers, we all want to write powerful truths into our stories… but how do we make a theme powerful and not preachy?

If this is a question you’ve been asking yourself lately, YOU’RE IN LUCK. “Theme” is the big topic we’re tackling today. Not just why it’s important, but how to write theme into your story in such a way that leaves readers thinking long after they’ve turned the final page.  I’ll be showing you the simple 5-step process I use to weave powerful and non-preachy themes into my stories.

I’ve had quite a few requests for a video breaking down theme in story, so I’m super excited to share this one with you today! It’s actually one of my new favorite episodes of WritersLife Wednesday. In it, we go over:

  • what “theme” actually is and why it’s important to telling a powerful story
  • how to find the perfect theme for YOUR story
  • how your theme directly correlates with your protagonist’s conflict
  • the secret to making your theme subtle yet impactful
  • how it all connects to neuroscience and satisfies your readers

Let’s talk.

Let’s talk theme! What is YOUR story’s theme? Why are you passionate about this message? Let’s discuss all things theme in the comments below!

Rock on,
